Research Interests

Tony set up the magazine website in 2001. It is based on a wide range of research into and personal experience of the magazine industry and builds on material he had developed running the printing degree and the School of Publishing at West Herts College in Watford.

This led him into researching the history of magazines and to recent commissions for books from both the Victoria & Albert Museum and Cambridge University Press. Previously, as an editor, he had launched his first magazine, the computer title Acorn User, in 1982 where he led a pioneering team in digital production and online publishing. He launched and/or edited six other titles at Redwood Publishing and BBC Magazines, winning several industry awards. He then moved to Watford, and after eight years left the college to return to journalism at the Financial Times in 2000, where he worked on the daily paper, FT Weekend, and the iPad edition.

Tony left the FT in 2016 to focus on lecturing and writing. He has acted as external examiner at both Kingston University and the London College of Communication for degree and postgraduate programmes, as well as lecturing and running workshops for the British Council in the UK and the Far East, and Glion University in Switzerland on MBA and undergraduate programmes. His research interests are based around magazines and include: managerial strategies during industrial disputes; the use of magazines by political, social and artistic movements; and magazine design. He maintains a database of his library of about 5,000 magazines and an even more extensive picture library of magazine covers and pages. He lives in Borough, London, and Hadleigh, Suffolk.

Tony has a degree in engineering science from the University of Warwick and was elected a Fellow of the RSA in 1988. He is a reader at the British Library, the St Bride Foundation Printing Library and the National Art Library, and a member of the Printing Historical Society.
