Research Interests

After a working career in an entirely unconnected field (social housing and homelessness) Johanna’s  research interests are in all aspects of the working careers of women ‘of the middling sort’ in the first half of the nineteenth century.  Her particular focus is on those engaged in the business of image-making, particularly in printed material, and their strategies to maintain their income as technology,  working arrangements and popular culture changed.  She is currently researching the identities, training and economic activity of female wood-engravers.  Other research interests include water-colour painters supplying images for the gift book and part-work trades and writers publishing on the subject of women and their working opportunities in the world of visual culture.
