Printing and the mind of the Midlands

  • Winterbourne House and Garden University of Birmingham (map)

As part of Winterbourne’s Year of Print, Caroline Archer is delivering a talk entitled ‘Printing and the mind of the Midlands’.

Printing, so often regarded simply as a service industry, has, since its inception, not only borrowed from but also contributed to industries very different from its own. Using Birmingham and District as a lens through which to examine industrial connections, this talk considers the relationship between printing and two very different trades—non-precious metals and pottery. It considers the circumstances that enabled these interactions and reflects on how printing not only contributed to, but also benefited from these exchanges and with what consequences.
