The Print Culture of Radical Birmingham 1817-1832
This seminar will be lead by Sue Thomas and Dr Dan Wale, who will guide us through the pamphlets and newspapers written from both the pro- and anti-reform perspectives. They will consider how the posters were used in the campaign for the franchise and question who were the printers and what can we find out about them?
Sue Thomas is a postgraduate researcher at the University of Birmingham currently investigating the life of Birmingham radical leader, George Edmonds. Dan Wale has recently completed a PhD in Modern History at the University of Birmingham. He has written articles for History West Midlands, Warwickshire History and Birmingham Cathedral's website. He also gives talks to local history groups on juvenile crime in nineteenth-century Birmingham. He is presently employed as a research assistant at the Centre for Printing History and Culture based at Birmingham City University.
‘Pen and Print: archives, books and ephemera for research students’ is a bi-monthly seminar series the purpose of which is three-fold:
to familiarise research students who are using historical sources with the range of material available in the CRL;
to engage research students from a variety of discipline to explore together how primary sources can be used;
to compare the different approaches that scholars from diverse disciplines take to the interpretation of manuscripts and printed matter.
